BOLO: Armed and Dangerous Suspect, Scotty Roy Hills, Wanted After Firing Shots at Rockingham Police Officers

ANSON COUNTY, N.C. (Sept. 8, 2025) – Multiple law enforcement agencies are engaged in an intensive search for Scotty Roy Hills of Wadesboro, a wanted suspect who opened fire on Rockingham Police officers during a vehicle pursuit Monday afternoon. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any information regarding Hills’ whereabouts immediately.

High-Speed Pursuit Leads to Shootout

The incident began when Rockingham Police attempted to stop a vehicle flagged by the Flock license plate reader system as being linked to a wanted subject. Officers pursued the vehicle as it traveled into Anson County.

Deputies with the Anson County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit and successfully deployed stop sticks along Highway 74 near Harrington Road in Lilesville, disabling the suspect’s vehicle.

The driver, identified as Scotty Roy Hills, exited the disabled car and fled on foot into a wooded area near Harrington Road.

During the chase, Hills fired multiple shots at pursuing officers. Fortunately, no law enforcement personnel were struck. Officers lost visual contact with him as he disappeared deeper into the wooded terrain.

Massive Law Enforcement Response

The Anson County Sheriff’s Office, Polkton Police Department, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Rockingham Police Department, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Aviation Unit are coordinating in the ongoing search effort. Ground units, K9 teams, and aerial support are canvassing the Harrington Road area and surrounding communities.

Authorities have described Hills as armed and extremely dangerous. Residents in the area are urged to remain indoors, lock doors and vehicles, and immediately report any suspicious activity.

Reward Offered

Law enforcement officials have announced that a reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of Scotty Roy Hills. Anyone who sees Hills or has knowledge of his location is strongly urged not to approach him but instead call 911 or contact the Anson County Sheriff’s Office immediately.

Public Safety Reminder

Sheriff’s officials emphasized that while Hills remains at large, there is no indication of a direct threat to the wider public outside of the immediate area of the search. Still, community cooperation is considered essential in safely bringing the suspect into custody.

“This suspect has already demonstrated a willingness to use deadly force against law enforcement,” officials said. “We are asking the public to exercise extreme caution and help us by reporting information quickly. Together, we can bring this dangerous situation to a safe resolution.”
