Active Assailant Reported at Evergreen High School; Multiple Students Critically Injured in Shooting

DENVER, Colo. — A terrifying scene unfolded Wednesday afternoon at Evergreen High School in Jefferson County after authorities responded to reports of an “active assailant” on campus. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that at least two students had been shot, though hospital officials later reported three total victims, all in critical condition.

The shooting was reported shortly after midday, prompting a massive law enforcement response. Dozens of officers swarmed the school grounds as students, teachers, and staff sheltered in place. Emergency medical teams quickly transported the injured to CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, where doctors are working to stabilize them.

During a press briefing, a spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the shooting occurred on school property and that the injured individuals are all believed to be students. At this time, it remains unclear how many suspects may have been involved or whether any remain at large. Authorities have not released details about the weapon or possible motive.

Parents rushed to nearby reunification sites, anxiously awaiting word on their children’s safety. The Jefferson County School District confirmed that Evergreen High School was immediately placed on lockdown, and surrounding schools were also secured out of precaution. Law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels are assisting with the investigation.

The incident has already sparked strong reactions from community members and elected officials. U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen, who represents Colorado’s 7th Congressional District, expressed her grief on social media:

“I’m shocked and heartbroken over today’s events at Evergreen High School. I’m hopeful that law enforcement is able to intervene and ensure all of our kids come home safe. We are in communication with local law officials and will be there to support the Evergreen community.”

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has urged the public to avoid the area while the investigation remains active. Parents and guardians are being directed to an official reunification center, where counselors and crisis response teams are available to provide support.

This shooting adds to a troubling pattern of gun violence in schools across Colorado, a state still haunted by past tragedies at Columbine High School and STEM School Highlands Ranch. For many in the Evergreen community, Wednesday’s incident is a painful reminder of the urgent need for stronger school safety measures.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.
