LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — What began as a routine afternoon fishing trip on September 9th turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for the family and friends of Steven Sherrill Sr., 71, a seasoned fisherman known for his love of the Arkansas River.
Sherrill was fishing near Two Rivers Bridge, launching from River Mountain Park, when the boat he was in unexpectedly drifted away before he could react. Stranded in the river’s current, he fell into the water around 1:10 p.m., struggling to stay afloat. Witnesses nearby watched in horror as Sherrill fought the strong current before disappearing beneath the surface.
A friend immediately called 911, while another boater jumped into action, using sonar equipment to search the river’s depths for any sign of Sherrill. Little Rock Fire Department crews arrived quickly, eventually locating Sherrill and pulling him from the water. Life-saving measures began on the scene, and paramedics rushed him to a local hospital where medical teams worked tirelessly throughout the night to stabilize him.
Despite these efforts, Sherrill succumbed to his injuries at 3:30 a.m. on September 10th. Baptist Health allowed his family extended access beyond visiting hours, giving them precious final moments together with their loved one.
Sherrill’s passing has left the local fishing community and his loved ones reeling. Friends remember him not only for his skill and passion for fishing but also for his warm personality and the joy he brought to countless afternoons on the river. His presence will be sorely missed by family, friends, and all who had the privilege of sharing in his love for the outdoors.
