WAYNESBORO, Va. — The Waynesboro Police Department has launched an investigation after officers discovered Michael H. Capaccio, 68, of Staunton, deceased inside a residence on Friday afternoon.
According to a department release, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:25 p.m. on September 12, 2025, to conduct a welfare check at a residence located in the 2000 block of West Main Street. Upon entering the home, officers found Capaccio’s body.
Police are treating the incident as a suspicious death and have not yet released details surrounding the circumstances inside the residence or the possible cause of death. Authorities confirmed there is no immediate threat to the community, and emphasized that the case remains in the early stages of investigation.
Detectives and forensic units spent several hours at the scene Friday evening, collecting evidence and documenting conditions inside the home. The body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further examination, including an autopsy that is expected to provide additional clarity on the cause and manner of death.
Neighbors reported seeing police activity along West Main Street for much of the afternoon as officers canvassed the area, spoke with nearby residents, and secured the scene. One resident, who declined to give their name, said the quiet neighborhood was shaken by the sudden presence of multiple patrol cars and crime scene tape.
Police officials have not indicated whether they believe foul play was involved, but by classifying the case as suspicious, investigators are keeping all possibilities on the table until evidence provides a clearer direction.
