EVERGREEN, Colo. — Authorities have identified the shooter in Friday’s tragic incident at Evergreen High School as 16-year-old Desmond Holly, a student who opened fire on classmates before turning the gun on himself.
Police say the shooting unfolded suddenly as students were transitioning between classes, leaving the school community reeling in shock. Two students were struck by gunfire before Holly died of a self-inflicted wound.
Victims of the Shooting
One of the victims has been identified as 18-year-old Matthew Silverstone, who remains in critical condition at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood. Silverstone’s family has asked for privacy but thanked the community for the outpouring of support and prayers.
The second victim, whose identity has not been released due to privacy considerations, is being treated at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where they are listed in serious condition.
Law Enforcement Investigation
The Evergreen Police Department, working alongside Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies and federal partners, continues to investigate the motive behind the attack. Detectives are reviewing social media activity, interviewing classmates and teachers, and collecting evidence from the school grounds.
Officials have not disclosed whether Holly had any prior disciplinary or criminal record. They emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to be patient as they work to piece together a timeline of events.
Community Response
In the wake of the shooting, the Evergreen community has rallied to support victims and families. On Friday evening, hundreds of students, parents, and residents gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor the victims and mourn the tragic loss of life.
Speakers at the vigil included local clergy, school administrators, and grieving classmates who shared memories of friendship, resilience, and hope. Many attendees wore school colors and carried candles as a symbol of unity in the face of heartbreak.
Mental health counselors have also been made available to Evergreen High School students and staff as they process the trauma of the shooting. The school district has announced that additional support services will remain in place in the coming weeks.
A Community in Mourning
The incident has reignited discussions around school safety, youth mental health, and access to firearms. Local officials acknowledged the pain the community is experiencing and pledged to work toward solutions that could help prevent future tragedies.
As Evergreen grieves, the names of the victims are being lifted up in prayer, and the memory of those impacted is being honored in vigils, classrooms, and homes across Colorado.
