What began as a summer pool party in Detroit ended in violence and heartbreak, leaving 25-year-old Martisha Payne of Detroit and 31-year-old Jakirea Williams of Chesterfield Township dead, and two other men seriously injured, after an argument spiraled out of control. Authorities say the tragedy was sparked by jealousy and fueled by rage.
The Incident
According to Detroit police, the violence erupted last month when 31-year-old Daiwan Hobson became angry after another man danced with his girlfriend. Witnesses say the dispute began as a heated argument in the backyard of a home hosting the pool party.
But the situation quickly turned deadly. Hobson allegedly pulled out a knife and began attacking people. The fight spilled from the backyard into the front yard as neighbors looked on in horror.
By the time the violence stopped, four people had been stabbed.
The Victims
Two of the victims lost their lives:
- Martisha Payne, 25, a woman from Detroit remembered by friends as joyful and full of life.
- Jakirea Williams, 31, a man from Chesterfield Township, described by loved ones as caring and devoted to family.
Two other men survived the attack:
- A 31-year-old man from Pontiac
- A 40-year-old man from Detroit
Both sustained serious injuries but are expected to recover.
A Troubling Past
Adding to the outrage, prosecutors revealed that Hobson had only recently been released from prison in July 2025—just one month before the fatal stabbings. Court records show he has an extensive criminal history.
Now, Hobson faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to murder. Prosecutors say they intend to pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law, calling the crime “a senseless act of violence that robbed two people of their lives.”
Community in Shock
The Detroit neighborhood where the party took place is still shaken. Residents say what was supposed to be a fun summer gathering turned into a scene of chaos and terror.
“People were screaming, running everywhere—it was like something out of a nightmare,” one neighbor recalled. “You never expect something like this to happen right outside your door.”
Family and friends of the victims are now mourning lives cut short. Vigils have been held for Payne and Williams, with loved ones calling for justice and pleading for an end to the violence plaguing their community.
A Call for Peace
The tragedy highlights the devastating consequences of unchecked anger and the deadly escalation of arguments. Authorities are urging the community to remember the victims and to work together to prevent further acts of senseless violence.
“This didn’t have to happen,” a family member of one victim said. “All of this over something so small—two beautiful people are gone forever.”
As the case moves through the courts, the Detroit community is left to grieve, to heal, and to hope that justice will be served for Martisha Payne and Jakirea Williams.
