CAMBRIDGE, Md. — A family dispute in Cambridge turned violent Friday morning, leaving one man seriously injured and his teenage stepson in police custody, according to the Cambridge Police Department.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. on September 5, 2025, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 400 block of Skinners Court. Upon arrival, they discovered an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.
Emergency responders quickly rendered aid before the victim was airlifted by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Authorities say his condition is critical but stable as of Friday evening.
Investigators swiftly identified a 15-year-old male suspect, who police confirmed is the victim’s stepson. The juvenile was taken into custody without further incident and is currently being held as detectives continue their investigation. His identity has not been released publicly due to his age.
The Cambridge Police Department has secured the home as an active crime scene while evidence technicians and investigators collect physical evidence and conduct interviews with neighbors and potential witnesses. Authorities say it remains unclear what led to the shooting, though they believe it stemmed from a domestic conflict inside the residence.
Cambridge Police Chief Mark Lewis expressed gratitude to the Maryland State Police and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance at the scene, noting that interagency cooperation was critical in the rapid response and containment of the incident.
“This was a difficult and dangerous situation,” Lewis said in a prepared statement. “We are thankful for the swift actions of our officers and partner agencies that ensured the suspect was taken into custody safely.”
The juvenile suspect remains in police custody as detectives work with the Dorchester County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine what charges will be filed. Prosecutors will also decide whether the 15-year-old will be charged as a juvenile or as an adult.
Police say a more detailed press release will be issued in the coming days as the investigation continues.
Residents in the Skinners Court neighborhood expressed shock at the violence, with several neighbors noting that the family had only lived in the area for a short time. Community leaders are calling for additional support services for families experiencing conflict, hoping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
