MAD RIVER TWP., Ohio — A tragic crash in Clark County on Wednesday morning has claimed the life of 17-year-old Abigail Campbell, a Springfield teenager remembered for her bright spirit, dedication to school, and love for athletics.
The Crash
The fatal incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. on Fairfield Pike near Hunter Road, according to the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Investigators said Campbell was driving westbound in a 2002 Dodge Stratus when her vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.
Emergency crews arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene. The Clark County Coroner’s Office later confirmed her identity.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, though no other vehicles were involved. The cause of the accident has not yet been released.
Remembering Abigail
Abigail Campbell was a student at Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center (CTC), with her home school being Greenon Local Schools. She was active in extracurricular activities and a proud member of the Greenon girls’ tennis team, according to Superintendent Darrin Knapke.
In a heartfelt statement, Knapke expressed the community’s grief:
“We are deeply saddened to share that one of our community students, Abigail Campbell, has tragically passed away following a single-car accident. We are keeping Abigail’s family, friends, CTC, and our Greenon community in our thoughts and prayers during this unimaginable time.”
Friends and classmates described Abigail as a kind-hearted young woman with a positive outlook on life. Her peers on the tennis team said she always encouraged others, whether in competition or in everyday challenges.
Support for Students
In the wake of the tragedy, Greenon has activated its Traumatic Event Crisis Intervention Plan (TECIP) to provide counseling and emotional support for students and staff. Counselors and crisis teams will remain available throughout the week for anyone struggling to process the loss.
“We know this loss will be deeply felt,” Knapke added. “We are committed to helping our students and staff navigate the days ahead with care and compassion.”

Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Enon Police Department, Mad River Township Fire and EMS, and Dan’s Towing. Their coordinated efforts ensured the scene was secured and investigated with care.
A Community in Mourning
