Etowah County Tragedy: Husband and Wife Found Dead in Coats Bend Home

ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) — A quiet Sunday afternoon in the Coats Bend community was shattered when deputies with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office discovered 71-year-old James Timothy Thornton and his wife, 57-year-old Kelley Davis Thornton, dead inside their home. The incident occurred on September 7, 2025, at a residence along the 6000 block of Old Highway 411, just north of Gadsden.

According to officials, deputies were dispatched around noon to conduct a wellness check after concerns were raised about the residents’ safety. Upon arrival, deputies entered the home and made a tragic discovery: the couple had both died from gunshot wounds.

The scene was quickly secured as investigators began piecing together the circumstances surrounding the deaths. At this time, the Sheriff’s Office has not confirmed whether foul play, a domestic incident, or other factors are involved, stressing that the case remains an active investigation.

The community of Coats Bend, known for its tight-knit families and rural tranquility, has been deeply shaken by the news. Neighbors expressed disbelief, describing the Thorntons as long-time residents who were well-liked and respected in the area.
