Fatal Crash on U.S. Route 1 in Woolwich Claims One Life, Injures Another

Woolwich, Maine – September 5, 2025 — The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a tragic motor vehicle crash that occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, September 5, on U.S. Route 1 in Woolwich.

At approximately 4:22 a.m., deputies responded to reports of a two-vehicle head-on collision between the Montsweag Restaurant and the intersection of Mountain Road. Upon arrival, first responders found both vehicles fully engulfed in flames as a result of the impact.

According to investigators, a 2022 Toyota Tundra driven by Alex C. Colson, 38, of Rockland, was traveling northbound on U.S. Route 1 when it crossed the centerline into the southbound lane. The pickup collided with a 2003 Freightliner box truck operated by Scott Rice, 60, of Waldoboro.

Mr. Rice attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to do so. Following the crash, he was able to escape his vehicle and was later transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries that authorities say are not considered life-threatening. Tragically, Mr. Colson sustained extensive injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputy Alex Faith of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. The collision is being reconstructed by members of the Sheriff’s Office to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Woolwich Fire/Rescue, Wiscasset Fire Department, West Bath Fire/Rescue, Bath Police Department, Topsham Police Department, and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit. Emergency personnel worked quickly to contain the fire, provide medical assistance, and clear the roadway.

As a result of the crash and subsequent investigation, U.S. Route 1 was closed for approximately four hours, reopening to traffic at around 8:30 a.m.

Authorities have not released additional details at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
