HOUSTON, Texas (September 5, 2025) – Steven Williams, 25, was fatally shot this week outside his southwest Houston apartment complex in what police say began as a dispute over a social media post.
Authorities say the shooting happened on the morning of Monday, September 1, in the parking lot of Williams’ apartment building on Oakmoor Parkway near West Airport Boulevard.
According to investigators, the suspected shooter — identified as 35-year-old Demech Williams — confronted Steven after becoming upset over an Instagram post.
Steven’s girlfriend told police the confrontation began when Demech came to their apartment door, banging loudly and demanding to speak with him. Initially, Steven retreated inside, but surveillance footage from a doorbell camera reportedly shows Demech waiting outside with a firearm in hand.
Moments later, Steven stepped outside once again. Police say that’s when Demech opened fire, striking him three times.
Neighbors confirmed to investigators that they saw the suspect pull the trigger before fleeing the scene.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Steven was pronounced dead at the scene in the parking lot.
Police are continuing to search for Demech Williams, who has been charged with murder. Authorities are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the Houston Police Department Homicide Division or call Crime Stoppers anonymously.
The fatal shooting has left neighbors shocked and grieving, as many say they are disturbed that something as minor as a social media post could escalate into deadly violence.
