Fatal Three-Vehicle Crash on I-40 in Johnston County Leaves One Dead, Two Drivers Facing Charges

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A tragic three-vehicle collision on Interstate 40 in Johnston County has claimed the life of Cheryl Elaine Boesel, a Hope Mills woman, and led to charges against two other drivers involved in the crash.

Authorities say the fatal wreck happened earlier this week along a busy stretch of I-40, causing major traffic delays and drawing a large emergency response. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash involved a Mini Cooper, a Jeep, and a third vehicle.

The driver of the Mini Cooper, identified as Cheryl Elaine Boesel, of Hope Mills, died at the scene from her injuries. Officials confirmed that Boesel, who was the sole occupant of her car, did not survive despite immediate response efforts by first responders.

Investigators say the driver of the Jeep, Miriam Biviano, of Raleigh, is facing charges of failure to reduce speed and driving without an operator’s license. Troopers noted that Biviano’s actions were a contributing factor in the crash.

Authorities also confirmed that the driver of the third vehicle is facing charges, though details of those charges have not yet been fully disclosed. The names of other individuals involved have not been released, and it is unclear if they sustained injuries in the collision.

Traffic along I-40 was backed up for hours as crews worked to investigate, clear debris, and reopen lanes. Motorists reported significant delays and detours in the area as troopers reconstructed the scene to determine the exact sequence of events.

The crash remains under investigation as officials review evidence, including witness statements and vehicle data. Additional charges could be filed as the case develops.

The loss of Cheryl Elaine Boesel has deeply shaken her family and community. Friends described her as a kind and warmhearted woman whose sudden passing is devastating to those who knew her.

State troopers are reminding all drivers of the importance of safe driving practices, particularly maintaining appropriate speed and following traffic laws, in order to prevent tragedies like this on North Carolina’s highways.
