SUFFOLK, Va— A tragic accident in Suffolk claimed the life of 21-year-old Anton Smith on Saturday night after the go-kart he was driving was struck by an SUV.
According to the Suffolk Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m. in the 4900 block of Nansemond Parkway, a stretch of roadway that is often busy with evening traffic. Initial findings from investigators indicate that the SUV collided with the rear of the go-kart, which was traveling in the roadway at the time.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene despite immediate emergency response. Authorities confirmed he was the only occupant of the go-kart.
The driver of the SUV remained on the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement during the investigation. No additional injuries were reported.
In the aftermath of the collision, Nansemond Parkway was closed for approximately five hours as officers with the Suffolk Police Department’s Traffic Unit conducted an accident reconstruction and gathered evidence. The road reopened early Sunday morning.
Police have not yet released details regarding potential contributing factors, such as speed, visibility, or impairment. The investigation remains ongoing.
