LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal vehicle accident near West Lauderdale Elementary School as 68-year-old Lon Harrison of Heidelberg.
The crash occurred on Center Hill Martin Road near its intersection with Masonic Lodge Road. Emergency crews were dispatched after reports of a serious collision, which drew a large response from first responders in the community.
According to officials, volunteers from the Bailey Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), along with other emergency personnel, arrived quickly and immediately began lifesaving measures. CPR was performed at the scene until Metro Ambulance services arrived. Despite their combined efforts, Mr. Harrison was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The accident has left the Heidelberg community and those connected to West Lauderdale deeply saddened. Neighbors and family friends described Harrison as a kind and steady presence who was well-regarded by those who knew him.
Authorities have not released additional information about the circumstances leading up to the crash, including whether other vehicles were involved. The incident remains under investigation by local law enforcement, who are working to determine the cause.
As investigators continue their work, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to Harrison’s family and reminded drivers to remain vigilant on county roads, particularly in areas near schools and intersections where traffic can be heavy.
Funeral arrangements for Lon Harrison are expected to be announced in the coming days.
