Hopewell Police Arrest Suspect in Deadly Shooting That Claimed Life of 34-Year-Old Travis Lamont Coleman

HOPEWELL, Va. — A tragic shooting Friday evening in Hopewell has left 34-year-old Travis Lamont Coleman dead and 42-year-old Johnnie Terrell McGhee facing multiple charges, authorities announced.

On September 5, 2025, at approximately 8:39 p.m., Hopewell Police officers were called to the area of Arlington Road and Raleigh Street after receiving reports of an unresponsive male. When officers arrived, they found Coleman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arrest Made Within 24 Hours

Following an intensive overnight investigation, police announced on Saturday, September 6, that McGhee, a Hopewell resident and former Richmond resident, had been taken into custody in connection with the homicide.

McGhee now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Second-Degree Murder
  • Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
  • Shooting in a Public Place Resulting in Injury

He was booked into custody without further incident.

Police Credit Officers and Community

Hopewell Police Chief Gregory Taylor expressed gratitude to his department and the community for their role in the swift resolution.

“I am thankful for the tireless efforts of the Patrol Division as well as the Investigators, and the Community’s support in the quick apprehension of the suspect,” Chief Taylor said in a statement.

Authorities did not provide details on what may have led to the shooting, noting that the case remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Community Shaken by Violence

The fatal shooting marks another violent incident in Hopewell, a small city that has faced recurring challenges with gun violence. Neighbors in the Arlington Road and Raleigh Street area reported shock and sadness following the deadly encounter, with many expressing concern about safety in their community.

Police have not released any additional information about a possible motive, whether the victim and suspect knew each other, or if others may have been involved.
