The Lacey Township Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its most respected and decorated leaders, Captain Gary C. Smith #14 (Retired), who passed away on September 3, 2025, at the age of 87.

A Distinguished Career of Service

Capt. Smith began his storied career with the department in 1969, following his graduation from the Ocean County Police Academy’s Basic Class #13. From the start, he displayed the qualities that would define his professional life. He graduated at the top of his class, achieving the highest overall average, while also earning second place in academics and second place in firearms.

Just three years later, in 1972, he earned a promotion to Sergeant. The following year, after graduating from the 28th Criminal Investigation Class at the New Jersey State Police Academy (1973), he was assigned to the Detective Bureau, where his sharp investigative skills and natural leadership quickly set him apart.

In 1974, he was promoted to Lieutenant and took on additional responsibilities as the department’s Public Information Officer, serving as the voice of the agency during critical times. By 1977, Smith’s dedication to excellence led him to the prestigious FBI National Academy’s 107th Session in Quantico, Virginia, an experience that further broadened his expertise and network within law enforcement nationwide.

His final promotion came in 1980, when he rose to the rank of Captain, a position in which he would serve with honor and distinction until his retirement on March 1, 1996. Over the course of 26 years, Capt. Smith became a cornerstone of the Lacey Township Police Department, respected by peers, community leaders, and residents alike.
