Man Identified in Fatal Miramar Shooting; Suspect Arrested

SAN DIEGO — Authorities have identified the victim of a deadly daylight shooting in the Miramar area earlier this week as 57-year-old Markus Vega, of San Diego. Police say Vega was shot while sitting inside a parked vehicle on Wednesday afternoon, a brazen act that left the community shaken.

The Shooting

According to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), the incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. Wednesday in the 8600 block of Production Avenue, near Camino Santa Fe. Vega was in the front passenger seat of a parked car when the gunfire erupted.

First responders rushed to the scene and found Vega critically injured. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, he was later pronounced dead.

Suspect Arrested

The next day, investigators announced a breakthrough. Joseph Hendry, 42, was taken into custody on Thursday in connection with the killing. Hendry has been booked on suspicion of murder.

Police have not released details on what evidence led them to identify Hendry as the suspect, nor have they disclosed a possible motive for the shooting. Lt. Chris Tivanian of SDPD said the investigation remains ongoing, with detectives working to determine the circumstances that led to the attack.

Community Reaction

The shooting, which happened in broad daylight on a busy industrial street, has raised concerns among workers and residents in the Miramar area. Production Avenue is home to several businesses and warehouses, and employees in the area said they were startled by the sudden presence of police and emergency crews.

“It’s scary to think something like that could happen right outside your workplace,” one nearby employee said. “You just don’t expect that in the middle of the afternoon.”

Ongoing Investigation

SDPD has not confirmed whether Vega and Hendry knew each other or if the shooting was a random act of violence. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and interviewing potential witnesses.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the SDPD Homicide Unit or call Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Remembering the Victim

Friends of Markus Vega described him as a hardworking man who had lived in San Diego for many years. While police have not released further personal details, those close to him said his death is a devastating loss to his family and community.

As the investigation continues, police are asking the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the area.
