NEVER FORGOTTEN: Honoring Firefighter James Keegan – Lawrence Fire Department, MA (September 9, 1885)

The sacrifice of a firefighter is never bound by time, and though nearly a century and a half has passed, the legacy of Firefighter James Keegan of the Lawrence Fire Department remains etched into the history of Massachusetts’ firefighting community. On September 9, 1885, Firefighter Keegan, assigned to Engine 2, lost his life in the line of duty while responding to an emergency at the Lee, Blackburn Chemical Company in Methuen.

The tragic incident unfolded when Firefighter Keegan fell into a vat of hot oil while carrying out his duties. Despite the immediate efforts of his fellow firefighters, the injuries sustained were devastating and ultimately claimed his life. His death was a sobering reminder of the dangers firefighters face not only from flames and smoke but also from the hazardous environments created by industrial accidents, which were all too common during the late 19th century.

At the time, firefighting was an especially perilous profession, with far fewer safety standards, limited protective gear, and little of the modern training or equipment that today’s firefighters rely upon. Firefighter Keegan’s sacrifice highlighted the risks these early fire service members willingly undertook in order to protect their neighbors, their communities, and their city.

The Lawrence Fire Department and the surrounding communities mourned deeply for Keegan in the aftermath of his death. His brothers in uniform carried on with heavy hearts, continuing their watch over the mills, factories, and neighborhoods of Lawrence and Methuen—knowing that each alarm could bring similar dangers.

Today, Firefighter James Keegan is remembered as part of a long line of heroes who gave everything in service to others. His name is honored in the chronicles of fallen firefighters, and his story continues to remind us of the ultimate price some pay in the pursuit of safeguarding lives and property.

Though the world has changed greatly since 1885, the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of men like James Keegan endure as the foundation of the fire service. The Lawrence Fire Department, alongside fire departments across the nation, ensures that the memory of their fallen is never forgotten.

On this day, September 9, 1885, we pause to remember Firefighter James Keegan of Engine 2, Lawrence Fire Department—who gave his life in the line of duty. His sacrifice lives on in the spirit of every firefighter who answers the call.

According to police, Marvin Byrd, 54, has been charged with first-degree murder among other offenses following the incident, which escalated from a disagreement at a social gathering. Law enforcement officials say the dispute occurred inside the residence where Byrd and the victim lived, with several witnesses present at the time.

The St. Louis Police Department reported that the altercation took place during a football watch party, a time meant for friends to gather and enjoy the game, which tragically turned deadly. Details from the investigation indicate that the argument between Byrd and his roommate escalated quickly into violence, resulting in the victim being shot. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but the victim succumbed to their injuries before reaching the hospital.

Authorities have not released the name of the deceased at this time, pending notification of family members. However, police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that Byrd is currently in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.

  • Desperate Search for 7-Year-Old Liam King: FBI Joins Hunt for Missing Asheboro Boy with Disabilities

Desperate Search for 7-Year-Old Liam King: FBI Joins Hunt for Missing Asheboro Boy with Disabilities

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A desperate search is underway in Randolph County after 7-year-old Liam King, a nonverbal child with cognitive impairments, vanished from his relative’s home on Forest Hills Drive late Sunday morning. Authorities say every passing hour is critical as the boy, who requires specialized care, remains missing in the dense North Carolina woods.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Liam walked away from the home around 11:00 a.m. on September 7, 2025. His disappearance triggered one of the largest search-and-rescue efforts the county has ever seen, with Sheriff Greg Seabolt deploying hundreds of personnel, drones, helicopters, and K-9 units to sweep the area. The initial search radius covered more than 2,500 meters around the last place Liam was seen.

Because Liam is nonverbal and lives with significant cognitive disabilities, authorities say locating him poses unique challenges. Deputies warn that he may avoid strangers—even those trying to help him—and could run from rescuers. His known fascination with water has further heightened urgency, leading teams to scour ponds, streams, creeks, and drainage areas where a child could be drawn but easily face danger.

Liam is described as weighing 55 pounds and was last seen wearing a Nike sweatshirt and Sonic the Hedgehog-themed socks. His distinct clothing has become a key identifier for both trained search teams and volunteers assisting in the effort.

The boy’s parents, Jose Luis Reyes and Brenda Victoria King, are living through every parent’s nightmare. With FBI agents now assisting in the case, law enforcement has emphasized that no possibility is being ruled out as the hours stretch on. “This is all-hands-on-deck,” Sheriff Seabolt said in a briefing. “We are exhausting every resource to bring Liam home safely.”

Local residents have been asked to carefully check their properties—barns, sheds, vehicles, and wooded areas—for any signs of the missing boy. Authorities also urge the public to avoid calling out Liam’s name if they spot him, as it may startle him into running away. Instead, community members are advised to quietly notify law enforcement and keep him in sight until trained rescuers arrive.

The search has drawn massive federal and state support, with the FBI, North Carolina Emergency Management, and surrounding county sheriff’s offices working in coordination. Volunteers from neighboring communities have also gathered in Asheboro to help distribute flyers, provide meals to search teams, and offer prayers at local churches.

As night falls on the second day of the search, the weight of uncertainty grows heavier. Liam’s family clings to hope, supported by a community determined not to give up. “He’s such a sweet boy,” a relative said. “We just need him back home safe where he belongs.”

Anyone with information about Liam King’s whereabouts is urged to immediately contact the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office or call 911.
