JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — September 2025 — Authorities have reopened all eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 after a fatal three-vehicle crash shut down traffic Thursday afternoon near mile marker 311, close to Veterans Parkway. The tragic collision, which occurred at approximately 3:56 p.m., claimed the life of a Hope Mills woman and left drivers and commuters in shock.
Sequence of Events
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), the chain reaction began when a blue Mini Cooper slowed in traffic. A red Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Scott Faircloth of Dunn, collided with the rear of the Mini Cooper. The impact forced the Ford off the roadway and onto the right shoulder.
Moments later, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee, operated by Miriam Biviano of Raleigh, also struck the Mini Cooper from behind, further compounding the severity of the crash.
The driver of the Mini Cooper, 62-year-old Cheryl Elaine Boesel of Hope Mills, tragically died at the scene.
Charges Filed
Following the preliminary investigation, troopers filed charges against both drivers who struck the Mini Cooper.
- Miriam Biviano, driver of the Jeep, has been charged with failure to reduce speed and driving without an operator’s license.
- Scott Faircloth, driver of the Ford F-150, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
Authorities emphasized that while charges have been filed, the investigation remains ongoing and additional factors will be reviewed. Trooper D.L. Barfield is leading the case.
Traffic Impact
The crash resulted in a major traffic disruption, with eastbound lanes of I-40 closed for several hours. Traffic backed up for approximately five miles, causing significant delays for late afternoon commuters. All lanes were eventually reopened later in the evening, restoring normal traffic flow.

Known for her kind spirit and positive outlook, she was remembered as someone who deeply valued family and cherished life’s simple joys.
