Baton Rouge, LA – Baton Rouge Police have announced a major development in the investigation of a tragic July 27th shooting that claimed the lives of 29-year-old Kimberly Martin and her unborn child. With the help of the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force, detectives have arrested 28-year-old Alex Burns, who is now facing charges in connection with the double tragedy.
The Arrest
Police confirmed Burns was taken into custody without incident and later booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He faces charges of 1st Degree Murder and Attempted 1st Degree Murder. The case began on Sunday, July 27, 2025, when Uniform Patrol Officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:42 a.m. at 5151 Highland Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were rushed to a local hospital. Tragically, Kimberly Martin, 29, succumbed to her injuries. Martin was pregnant at the time, and despite medical intervention, her unborn child also did not survive.
The second victim, whose identity has not been released, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.
