Remembering General William “Buck” Kernan: A Legacy of Service and Leadership

The Airborne and Special Operations Forces communities are mourning the loss of one of their greatest leaders and fiercest advocates, General William F. “Buck” Kernan, who passed away this week. His passing marks the end of a remarkable era of service, leadership, and devotion to Soldiers, their families, and the defense of our nation.

In a statement honoring his legacy, LTG Greg Anderson, XVIII Airborne Corps Commanding General, shared: “The Airborne and Special Operations Forces communities lost one of its greatest leaders and advocates this week with the passing of Gen. William ‘Buck’ Kernan. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of distinguished service to our nation and a deep commitment to Soldiers and their families. We offer our sincerest condolences to his family as we mourn together.”

General Kernan’s career is a testament to courage, perseverance, and an unwavering dedication to duty. He began his service in the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne Division, where he led Soldiers in combat during one of the most difficult eras in U.S. military history. Over the years, his path of leadership placed him in some of the Army’s most storied formations.

He commanded units in the 82nd Airborne Division and the 2nd Ranger Battalion, before assuming command of the 75th Ranger Regiment. During his time as the Ranger Regiment’s commander, he led one of the most significant operations in modern U.S. military history—the combat parachute assault during Operation Just Cause in Panama. His leadership and vision in these pivotal moments left an indelible mark on the force and set a standard of excellence for generations of Soldiers to follow.

General Kernan’s career continued to rise as he took command of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), later serving as commander of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg—a position that underscored his role as a trusted leader among America’s premier fighting forces. His service culminated when he attained the rank of four-star General, taking command of the U.S. Joint Forces Command, where he influenced military strategy, training, and readiness at the highest levels.

Known affectionately as “Buck,” General Kernan was respected not only for his battlefield acumen and operational brilliance but also for his compassion and care for Soldiers and their families. He understood that the strength of the Army was built not only on the courage of those in uniform but also on the resilience of the families who supported them. His advocacy for both remains one of the hallmarks of his enduring legacy.

A Celebration of Life ceremony is currently being coordinated to honor General Kernan’s memory, service, and contributions to the nation. Those interested in attending are encouraged to reach out to XVIII Airborne Corps Public Affairs .

As the Army community reflects on General Kernan’s extraordinary career, we are reminded that leaders like him are rare. His example will continue to inspire the Airborne and Special Operations Forces communities for generations, ensuring that his legacy lives on in every Soldier who follows in his footsteps.
