SARASOTA, Fla. (Sept. 12, 2025) — Sarasota Police officers are investigating a shooting that occurred Friday evening in the 2400 block of Watts Way, leaving one man injured and prompting a large police presence in the downtown area.
According to investigators, officers were dispatched just before 6 p.m. after reports of shots fired in the residential neighborhood. When they arrived, police learned that the victim — an adult male driver — had fled the immediate scene and was later located near First Street and Central Avenue.
Emergency responders provided initial medical aid before transporting the victim to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he is currently being treated for his injuries. Authorities have not yet released details on the extent of his condition.
Sarasota Police confirmed that three individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the incident. While no charges have been announced at this time, detectives say the individuals are being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
The shooting brought a heavy law enforcement response to the area, with multiple blocks temporarily restricted to traffic as officers gathered evidence and spoke with witnesses. Officials are urging drivers to seek alternate routes if traveling along Central Avenue, as parts of the roadway may remain closed during the investigation.
Residents in the neighborhood reported hearing several loud gunshots, followed by sirens. “I just heard pops, maybe four or five, and then police cars came rushing in,” said Jennifer Miller, who lives nearby. “It’s scary because this is usually a quiet area.”
The Sarasota Police Department emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages, and detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division are working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting.
“We are actively pursuing all leads and speaking with witnesses,” said SPD spokesperson Genevieve Judge. “While three people are in custody, we continue to encourage anyone with additional information to come forward and assist our detectives.”
Authorities are asking members of the public with information to contact the Sarasota Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 941-263-6070 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
As the investigation continues, police are expected to release more details in the coming days, including the identity of the victim and whether any charges will be filed against those detained.
