According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), officers responded around 9:35 a.m. on September 8, 2025, after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire near Cermak Road and State Street. When officers arrived, Meeks was found lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to her chin and thigh.

Meeks was immediately transported to Stroger Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. Johnson remained at the scene, and her firearm was recovered by police. She was taken into custody without incident.

Circumstances of the Shooting

Family members said Meeks had just dropped off her young son at school and was walking to work when the deadly confrontation occurred. Witnesses reported that Carlos “Losos” Way, the father of Meeks’ child and reportedly subject to an active restraining order, was present and physically restrained Meeks in a headlock during the altercation.

It was at that moment that Johnson allegedly drew her firearm and shot Meeks at close range. CPD confirmed that Area Three Detectives are leading the ongoing investigation to determine the full sequence of events and any contributing factors.

Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the exact circumstances leading up to the shooting.
