TOOELE, Utah — A tragic incident unfolded in Tooele on Saturday evening after police say a man driving under the influence struck two pedestrians, killing one and seriously injuring another. Authorities identified the suspect as Bryce Tanner Fivas, 36, who was arrested and booked into the Tooele County Jail on suspicion of automobile homicide and negligently operating a vehicle resulting in serious injury.
According to a police booking affidavit, officers were dispatched to the area of 2400 N. Main Street following reports of an auto-pedestrian crash. When they arrived, they found one victim lying in the roadway who had already succumbed to injuries. A second victim was located and transported to a nearby hospital. The extent of that person’s injuries has not yet been released.
Fivas was located nearby after his vehicle was discovered on fire across the street from the crash site. Investigators say he admitted he thought he may have hit someone while driving northbound on Main Street.
Officers reported several signs of intoxication during their encounter with Fivas. The affidavit states that they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, glossy red eyes, and slurred, delayed speech. Police also noted that Fivas failed multiple field sobriety tests.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the full sequence of events. Police have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of family members.
The fatal accident has left the Tooele community shaken, with many expressing concern over the ongoing dangers posed by impaired driving. Officials emphasized that such tragedies are preventable and serve as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
As the investigation continues, police are urging drivers to make responsible choices, use designated drivers, or rely on ride services to prevent future fatalities.
