Williamston Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal Shooting

WILLIAMSTON, N.C.– A 51-year-old man is in custody after police say he was responsible for a deadly shooting in Williamston over the weekend. Police confirmed that Jimmey Lynch was arrested just before 2 a.m. Sunday following a fast-moving investigation into the shooting death of Jermaine Smith, 27, of Hamilton.

The incident began around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, when officers were called to a home on Roberson Street for reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Smith suffering from serious injuries caused by the shooting. Despite emergency efforts, Smith died at the scene.

Detectives quickly identified Lynch as a suspect, and he was taken into custody a few hours later without incident. Lynch now faces an open count of murder. He is being held without bond in the Martin County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

The Williamston Police Department is continuing to investigate with support from the State Bureau of Investigation. Authorities have not said what may have led to the shooting or whether the two men knew each other.

Police are urging anyone with information about the case to call the Williamston Police Department at 252-792-2124.
